Historically, Bitcoin Core used the Berkeley DB (BDB) database engine to manage wallet.dat . Legacy wallets rely heavily on a random key pool. If you generate more addresses than the key pool holds (usually 1000 by default), older backups of your file will not contain the newly generated keys.
