For a much more stable and hassle-free experience, ditch the old software and use from Hamrick Software. VueScan is a third-party scanning application with its own built-in drivers for thousands of legacy scanners, including the UMAX Astra 4100. This is far more reliable than hacking the original drivers.

If the installer fails, you can force Windows 7 to recognize the device through the Device Manager. Open (type it into the Start menu). Find the scanner (it may have a yellow exclamation mark).
