সনাতন হিন্দু ধর্মের মূল ভিত্তি এবং বিশ্বের প্রাচীনতম সাহিত্য হলো ‘বেদ’। 'বিদ' ধাতু থেকে বেদ শব্দের উৎপত্তি, যার অর্থ হলো জ্ঞান। এই পবিত্র ধর্মগ্রন্থ কোনো একক ব্যক্তির রচনা নয়, বরং প্রাচীন ঋষিদের ধ্যানলব্ধ বাণী। মহর্ষি কৃষ্ণদ্বৈপায়ন বেদব্যাস এই বিশাল জ্ঞানরাশিকে চারভাগে বিভক্ত করেছিলেন। এই চার ভাগই একত্রে ‘চতুর্বেদ’ নামে পরিচিত। নিচে এই ৪ বেদের বিস্তারিত পরিচয় ও বাঙালি সনাতনীদের জন্য এর গুরুত্ব আলোচনা করা হলো।
